Potential City of Toronto Work Stoppage - Arenas

As everyone who follows the local news will be aware, the City and its outside union workers, represented by Local 416, will be without a contract as of Sunday, February 5th, 2012.  As of that date the City will be in a position to initiate a lockout of its outside workers and the Union will be in a position to strike.  The City workers represented by Local 416 include the maintenance staff at all of the City owned arenas at which the Knights house league and Select games and practices take place.  In addition to operating the Zambonis and maintaining the ice condition the City workers are also responsible for operating and maintaining the refrigeration plants at each arena.

The latest reports would indicate that the City and the Union are still 'at the table' speaking with one another and that some progress is being made, and that it appears likely that a strike or lock out would not actually commence next Monday, but rather perhaps several weeks after that date.  The fact remains, however, that in the event of a lock out or strike, the arenas may or may not remain open and operated by City management and that accordingly all of the Knights' ice permits after February 5th may be in jeopardy until a new contract settlement is negotiated.  The NYHL and GTHL are working on various contingency plans in the event a lockout or strike occurs.  The GTHL released a statement on the issue last week.

The Knights will do our best to disseminate information as it is made available to us, both by way of emails to our convenors (and through them to your children's coaches) and by updates posted to this website.  For the present we would ask that all convenors, coaches and parents check your emails regularly for announcements (and also follow the story in local media, which may well receive information on the negotiations in advance of GTHL).

The Knights remain committed to delivering our hockey programs with as little disruption to our families as possible and we will do whatever we can to cooperate with both the City and its outside workers to achieve that objective.
